There has been a rash of articles in the financial press recently warning that high inflation is inevitable in the near future because of the scale of government and central bank support provided during the pandemic.
The evidence to date suggests that is far from certain – a point we made in a letter to the Financial Times published last week. Deflation remains a potent and real threat.
We caution against too easily accepting any one interpretation of how the future might unfold; better to have considered and positioned for many outcomes:
